premier-league-logo1 Premier League Predictions: Gameweek 2Matchday one is now gone and we look forward to another weekend of action from the Barclays Premier League. As I mentioned last week, I’m going to be tracking my performance in the same manner IKTS does.

Even I will admit I was pretty bad by predictions standards last week. Only six out of ten correct, none on the nose. The only solace was I had three goal differentials correct. I’m one for one on correctly picking the banker and in not losing points on my insurance game.

And now onto this week’s slate of games.  Again, all times are Eastern and all TV times are subject to change without notice.

Banker Prediction of the Week: Fulham v Arsenal (Saturday 12:30 pm Fox Soccer Channel. Replay Thursday 3 pm). Yes both sides were completely unconvincing last week, but Fulham were just that weak at the back for me against Hull City. This won’t be like hosting Bolton, which Fulham has done in their past two home openers. It will a tight affair, but Arsenal have the quality see the game through. Fulham 0 Arsenal 1.

Blackburn Rovers v Hull City (Saturday 10 am, no TV). Hull City come crashing a bit back down to earth with their first road travel in the top flight. Blackburn were shaky against Everton, but I don’t know of anyone besides Geovanni who can cause the kind of havoc on Blackburn’s back line. I think Hull City will give a good account of themselves this weekend, but it won’t be enough. Blackburn Rovers 2 Hull City 1.

Stoke City v Aston Villa (Saturday 10 am. On delay Fox Soccer Channel Saturday 2:30 pm, Thursday 1 pm). Stoke City were just that bad last week. Aston Villa looked shaky in the first half, but came together at least up front in the second. I don’t see this being much of a competitive contest though as Aston Villa have the quality to see this game out without any problems. Stoke City 0 Aston Villa 2.

Wigan Athletic v Chelsea (Sunday 8:30 am. Setanta from 8:00 am. Replays 5 pm, Wednesday 6 pm). Chelsea were that good last Sunday, but going to the JJB has always been a bit of a tough ask. Zaki could prove to be a smart move for Wigan as he will keep them in any game this season. Chelsea though have just too much quality to not win here, however it will be tighter than Scolari will like. Wigan Athletic 1 Chelsea 2.

Liverpool v Middlesbrough (Saturday 10 am, Setanta from 9:30 am. Replays: 8:30 pm, Sunday 7 pm, Monday 12:30pm, Thursday 8:15 am). Both teams surprised me on the opening weekend. Liverpool in how poor they looked in getting a lucky 1-0 and Middlesbrough for how resolute they were in beating Spurs. This could very well be a case of history repeating itself as Boro haven’t won at Anfield in the Premier League. I don’t see this game being won until late. Liverpool 2 Middlesbrough 1.

West Bromwich Albion v Everton (Saturday 10 am, on delay Setanta Sports 6:45 pm. Replay Thursday 6:15 am). I’m almost tempted to call this game a draw. I personally was surprised as how disorganized Everton looked at the back last weekend. West Brom at the Hawthorns is a tough ask for a questionable Everton back line. However I don’t know if West Brom have the forwards to get a result in this one. I see this being won late. West Bromwich Albion 0 Everton 1.

Newcastle United v Bolton Wanderers (Saturday 10 am, on Setanta Broadband 2. On delay Setanta Sports Saturday 5 pm, Sunday 12:45 pm, Thursday 12:45 pm). To me this game depends on how Johan Elmander plays. Newcastle did what they needed to do at Old Trafford and come home with some confidence. Despite what Bolton did last week, I don’t expect them to get the result. Newcaslte United 2 Bolton Wanderers 0.

Portsmouth v Manchester United (Monday 3 pm Setanta Sports. Replay 7:45 pm). Two sides who have been the most disappointing and both need all three points. Manchester United’s form of late at Fratton Park isn’t spectacular, but right now I see them as having the lesser of two evils. Portsmouth are trying to figure out how to play without Muntari and with Crouch and Manchester United still can find goals from absolutely nothing. I almost don’t see this much as a competitive contest either. Portsmouth 0 Manchester United 2.

Manchester City v West Ham United (Sunday 11 am Fox Soccer Channel. Replay: 11 pm). I can’t get a read on this game. Manchester City looked really bad in their two games last week while West Ham United looked okay but not great against Wigan. When I take that into account, the only result I can come up with is draw. Mark Noble isn’t saving West Ham two weeks in a row. Manchester City 1 West Ham United 1.

Insurance Game of the Week: Tottenham Hotspur v Sunderland (Saturday 10 am Fox Soccer Channel. Replay Monday 1 pm). Is it too early in the season to say this is a must win for Tottenham? Has the Dimitar Berbatov situation affected them this much? You know Chimbonda and Malbranque will want to show up their former club, but have to take advantage of the chances they create. I don’t see Berbatov starting, coming on late, and getting the game winner. Tottenham 1 Sunderland 0.

An added feature to the top menu bar for everyone to enjoy. Check this page between 8 and 9 pm Eastern time in the US under the “Match Reports” page as it will be updated with all the full time reports from the major UK papers and other various sites.

Here’s to a good weekend of football!

Games To Watch This Weekend

200px-Premierleague Games To Watch This Weekend With a relatively lazy Friday as far as soccer news is concerned, I thought I’d put out a quick primer for the weekend’s most interesting matchups. This is something I’ll be doing sporadically throughout the year, though more so for domestic and continental cup competitions (when English teams are involved) rather than the Premierhip.

Tomorrow:
Tottenham vs. Sunderland — Neither team got a result in their respective opening games last week, but Sunderland looked more impressive in their 1-0 loss against Liverpool than Tottenham did in their 2-1 defeat at Middlesbrough. The Black Cats were even with Rafa’s boys all game long until a thunderbolt from Fernando Torres won it. Spurs needed an own goal in second half stoppage time just to account for the final scoreline. Boro played them off the park in that match.

The so-called “Tottenham trio” — Pascal Chimbonda, Teemu Tainio, and Steed Malbranque — will be returning to White Hart Lane for the first time since moving to Sunderland this summer. You can bet Chimbonda and Malbranque will be motivated to play well against the team that gave up on them. The three players each spent a couple seasons at Tottenham, though Tainio probably had the most success. He’ll miss this game with a muscle strain.

Tottenham made it clear through their summer signings that they’re pushing for a place in the Champions League. Performances like the one they turned in last week aren’t going get to it done, obviously. Sunderland, on the other hand, wants to stabilize their position in England’s top flight and then push their way up the table. This is the perfect opponent for them — one who struggles to defend. Sunderland won’t score many goals without star striker Kenwyne Jones, but if they can find a way to steal one or two tomorrow, this is a game from which they can pick up points.

Sunday:
Manchester City vs. West Ham — City opens their home schedule coming off a 4-2 shellacking at the hands of Aston Villa last week. That loss isn’t the main concern at the Eastlands right now, though, as news broke tonight that owner Thaksin Shinawatra, one of the most corrupt men in all of soccer, is preparing to resign from his position or, at the very least, sell some of his stake in the club. Instability is the name of the game right now in that area of Manchester.

His team doesn’t have much up front, which is a huge concern for manager Mark Hughes. Daniel Sturridge played very well off the bench at Villa, but he’s not ready to be a full-time starter. Valeri Bojonov is injured once again, as are Benjani and Darius Vassell. Chedwyn Evans and Sturridge are all City has for the time being, at least until record signing Jô comes back from his Olympic duty for Brazil.

West Ham picked up three points in a solid 2-1 win over Wigan at Upton Park. Dean Ashton scored both goals and would’ve earned himself another look-in to the England national team, but the striker came off with a cramp in his lower leg and was not selected by Fabio Capello. He should be ready to play tomorrow against a defense that was torn to shreds by Villa’s firepower.

If City loses on Sunday, make sure you turn up the volume when the final whistle is blown. Nothing like the clear sound of “boos” to get you going early in the morning, I always say.

Monday:
Portsmouth vs. Manchester United — Make no mistake: this is not the same Manchester United team that won the Premiership a year ago. Cristiano Ronaldo’s absence affects United as much as the loss of any one player from any team in the world. Without him, Sir Alex Ferguson’s team is vulnerable and struggles to score goals, which we saw in their 1-1 draw against Newcastle last week. No disrespect to Newcastle, but United beat them 6-0 at home last year when Ronaldo played (he had a hat trick), and Newcastle hasn’t improved their roster that much since then.

For their part, Portsmouth looked nothing like they did last season in their 4-0 spanking at Stamford Bridge last Sunday. Chelsea dominated the game — Pompey had a hard time advancing past midfield for stretches of the 90 minutes.

United and Pompey have developed a very nice little rivalry over the past few seasons, one that saw Sulley Muntari and Ronaldo get sent off in a two-minute span in the corresponding fixture last year, a game that ended 1-1. United won the second league game between the two 2-0, but Pompey returned the favor by knocking the Red Devils out of the FA Cup, a competition eventually won by the South Coasters. Just two weeks ago, United triumphed over ‘Arry Redknapp’s side in PK’s in the season-opening Community Shield.

There’s nothing like a Monday night game at Fratton Park. The crowd will be buzzing for an upset, one which wouldn’t be too surprising from this writer’s point of view.

Should be a good weekend in the Premiership.

Potential Upsets This Weekend: Bolton, Boro, West Brom

If you like a drop a couple of [your local currency] having a flutter on the football results, pull up a chair and let’s have a chat.  I like to look for value, rather than a sure thing, and here is where I see it this weekend.

Newcastle v Bolton - Away Win (@ 15/4)

Newcastle did well to come away from Old Trafford with a point, and they could have had all three.  However, I saw signs of their trademark defensive shakiness on a number of occasions, enough to suggest that Keegan hasn’t got everything figured out just yet.  Bolton looked good last week against weak opposition.  I think they could pull a smash-and-grab at St James’s Park.

West Brom v Everton - Home Win (@ 8/5)

West Brom hardly got a touch last week, but against Arsenal that’s almost to be expected.  They came away with a little credit for not collapsing completely.  Everton’s close-season problems don’t need repeating, and they were enough to give Paul Ince a gentle start to his Premier League tenure.  Will they hand the three points to another rookie Premier League manager?

Liverpool v Boro (@ 15/2)

Liverpool huffed and puffed against Sunderlands last weekend and only a piece of individual skill by Torres gave the Scousers all three points.  Boro conceded a lot of possession at home, but moved the ball swiftly and with intent given the chance.  Boro have a wretched record at Anfield, but with all the distractions that Benitez has created these last couple of weeks, they might never have a better chance of pulling off what would be the upset of the weekend.

So what do you reckon?  Are these three simply lambs to the slaughter?  Where is your [currency] going this weekend?

CONCACAF Qualifying: EPL Impact

blanco-and-sven CONCACAF Qualifying: EPL Impact

Former Manchester City and England Manager Sven Goran Eriksson and Cuauhtemoc Blanco discuss strategy/Reuters photo

The first matchday of group play in CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying brought us some outstanding football and some great escapes most notably by Mexico whose performance against Honduras at Estadio Azteca left little to be desired for seventy minutes. El Tri’s North London pair of Gio Dos Santos and Carlos Vela looked out of their depth and over their head in the match. Manager Sven Goran Eriksson had to use all three substitutions by minute 70 as Honduras stood on the cusp of a massive upset. The insertion of veteran Cuauhtemoc Blanco who had been frozen out of the setup by Mexico’s last two manager transformed the match and Mexico escaped with a 2-1 victory. Playing a key role for Honduras in their establishment of the 1-0 lead and solid play was Wigan’s Wilson Palacios.

The United States had a great 1-0 victory on the road in Guatemala City. I’ve seen some commentary by those who don’t understand the CONCACAF region describing the US performance as “woeful.” This characterization cannot be further from what I consider the truth as Everton’s Tim Howard made several saves in what was a very well set up tactical approach by Bob Bradley, the US Manager. Former Fulham, Leeds and Derby County midfielder Eddie Lewis played a critical role for the United States before being virtually assaulted and injured around minute 60. Former Fulham defender Carlos Bocanegra scored the US goal on a header served from a DaMarcus Beasley corner. Beasley currently with Rangers formerly played for Manchester City.

Jamaica Manager Rene Simoes made the very controversial decision last week to drop Marlon King of Hull City. But the Reggee Boys got a critical point on the road in Toronto against a Canadian side who now must rally to have any chance of advancing out of the group. Paul Stalteri of Spurs (although I believe he may have been loaned out somewhere) captained the Canadian side.

Trinidad and Tobago used a side made up largely of players in America’s second division (USL) and Leagues one and two to defeat Cuba on the road 3-1. Costa Rica struggled with El Salvador 1-0 but escaped with a win.

No Friday trades.  And this time we mean it!  So though I'm desperate to sell Bale for Cech, Traore or Mokoena/Nelsen, I won't.  And though I'm sure Deco's opening match was a fluke (he should have been sent off for that tackle!) and I would be better off with DDunn, Denilson, Faubert or Guthrie, I'll stick with the Portugese schemer.

So where does that leave us?  Heavy on Villa after their demolition of Citeh and Stoke's capitulation at Bolton. ...

Well, I have to say I didn't see the outbursts from Chelsea and Villa coming at all.  Sure the attacking talent is there but who would have guessed that either would be so sharp in front of goal against what we assumed would be competent mid-table Premier League opposition.  So, now that question that we have to answer is whether we believe that one or both of those performances were anomolies or whether one or both teams are positioned to be a real attacking force all season. ...
